That is nice.

The thing that made me really tear up after 9/11 was several months later. A group of Masai from Kenya, heard about the attack from a young man who'd been studying in the States. When a Masai family has a tragic loss, people give them cows, to build up their strength again. People came together and decided to send fourteen cows to the United States, to get us through our loss.

IIRC, they contacted the U.S. ambassador to Kenya, who came and accepted the cows, and arranged to have them exchanged for something more shippable, which went to a museum.

I cried. It seemed so utterly kind, and apolitical.

I think you know the story of the American Indians and the Irish potato blight:

Habitat for Humanity has a process by which each affiliate group pays a tithe to a sister affiliate in a poorer area. Ours is linked to Costa Rica, and we've built several houses there. A few years ago that affiliate presented a check, the product of a decade of tithes, and built a house is S. Alabama. Not to take their money would impoverish them.
